Myrcene: The Most Abundant Terpene in Cannabis
Earthy, musky, and with hints of tropical fruit. Myrcene is the aromatic heart of many of the most popular strains and could be one of the main culprits behind the well-known couchlock effect, that feeling of deep body relaxation.

If there's one terpene we could define as "the face of cannabis," it's undoubtedly myrcene. In some strains, it can exceed 50% of the total terpene profile, providing that characteristic earthy and intense aroma.
Where it's found in nature
Myrcene doesn't just live in cannabis. It is also abundantly present in hops—responsible for certain resinous notes in some craft beers—as well as ripe mango, fresh thyme, lemongrass, and verbena.
Its presence in mango has given rise to the popular theory that consuming it before cannabis could enhance its effects. A hypothesis still debated, but fascinating.
Effects and therapeutic potential
Research suggests that myrcene may have properties:
- relaxing and sedative
- muscle relaxant
- analgesic
- anti-inflammatory
- anxiolytic (in some experimental models)
Some studies also suggest that it could facilitate cannabinoid absorption, helping to explain the intense physical effects of certain terpene-rich strains.
Myrcene-rich strains
Indica or indica-dominant genetics usually have higher myrcene levels than many sativas. Among the best known:
- OG Kush
- Blue Dream
- Granddaddy Purple
- Mango Kush
If you are looking for a relaxing and body-focused experience, the terpene profile often says more than the commercial name of the strain.
How to preserve it
Myrcene is volatile: high temperatures during drying or improper storage can degrade it quickly.
To preserve it better:
- store flowers in dark glass jars
- avoid direct light
- keep it away from heat
- store in a cool and dry place
